Saving on water costs … so important right now!

Horticulture is one of the most important commercial sectors in the Netherlands. Although the current situation is making life difficult, the long-term prospects are positive for the agri-business. Just as in other industries, cost management is an important matter for this sector. In order to remain competitive in the world market, efforts are constantly being made to find innovations that will both improve products and maximize profits – and increasingly, to ensure sustainable production.

Sustainable energy management, also in relation to the desalination of clean well water. In the case of well water with high concentrates of salts, huge energy savings can be achieved through so-called “energy recovery.” By recovering energy from the flow of brine water, energy cost savings can be achieved of up to 60%!

In all sorts of areas, and in close collaboration with their clients, Hatenboer-Water is constantly searching for opportunities to implement and realize efficient cost-saving technologies.

Sufficient high-quality water at the lowest costs!

“We are always short of irrigation water” say many horticultural companies. Supplementing the water supply with desalinated well water offers the answer. It is in particular the areas where the well water has a high salt content that the desalination of this water requires a high input of energy. The salt water has to be pumped at a higher pressure through the membranes of a reverse osmosis, after which more than 99% of all salts, together with bacteria and minerals, are removed. Production of water of perfect quality!

For a number of years now, it has been possible to achieve energy savings from that very salt feed water by means of a so-called “energy recovery” system. This system re-uses the energy that remains in the concentrate after passage through a reverse osmosis installation. Savings in energy costs of 60% and more can be achieved. This technology is applied widely, among other things, in the production of potable water from seawater, but Hatenboer-Water has already designed and built systems incorporating energy recovery for the horticultural industry, this of course to the fullest satisfaction of the companies using them.
