From surface water to demineralized water for DSM

HydroBusiness B.V. extracts water from the river Maas at the harbour in Venlo and treats this to produce cooling water, process water and demineralized water for DSM. All the water extracted is passed through the treatment that produces cooling water, some of which is further treated to make process water, and a further part of which is then given additional treatment to reach demineralized water standard.

The present treatment plant has been in service for approximately six years, and in this time has operated virtually problem-free, with the only points for concern being the turbidity and colony counts of the process water. However, in recent months turbidity has risen to about 10 Nephelometric Turbidity Units (NTUs), a value at which membrane fouling is likely to occur in the demi water reverse osmosis production unit. Furthermore, occasional instances of higher colony count values (>100 Colony Forming Units/ml) were also observed.

The installation was recently taken over by HydroBusiness, who immediately decided to improve pre-treatment. HydroBusiness gave Hatenboer-Water the task of designing and building an Ultrafiltration installation to improve the turbidity and colony count of the water. This installation has a capacity of 45 m3 per hour of product water, and is housed in its entirety in an insulated 40’ container. The production of the feed water for treatment in the production of process water, including a chemically enhanced backflush, is completely PLC operated.

Functionality and durability were the key words in the design of the unit. Through its unique construction, the installation is accessible from all sides, and the wet-lay seamless container floor is chemical resistant and easy to maintain, which gives the unit a very smart and practical appearance.

This installation fits in with the series of industrial containerized units that Hatenboer-Water have already designed, built and commissioned for a variety of clients in the last two years.
