Plastic
Free @Sea
Hatenboer-Water has developed Plastic Free @ Sea to protect our oceans from plastic pollution. This solution, based on our expertise in water management for the Maritime & Offshore industry, not only reduces the ecological impact of ship owners but also brings cost savings.
It allows for the elimination of single-use plastic water bottles without the immediate need for significant investments in upgrading the entire drinking water system on board. Upgrades can then be spread over a longer period, while already benefiting from the cost and environmental savings.
With water being our most precious resource, it is crucial to protect our oceans from plastic pollution. At Hatenboer-Water, we now offer our Plastic Free @Sea solution as an alternative to single-use plastic for onboard water consumption.
This solution not only reduces the ecological footprint of ships but also provides significant cost savings. Our contactless bottle-filling station with an additional filtration step not only eliminates the need for plastic bottles but also offers attractive stainless steel water dispensers for the crew.
In situations where upgrades to the drinking water system are necessary throughout the vessel, we can immediately provide additional treatment (Reverse Osmosis filtration) right before the bottle-filling, ensuring the right water quality from the tap. This gives owners ample time to upgrade the system on board while already avoiding the use of plastic bottles.

How to deal with crew concerns
Many of our customers want to eliminate single-use plastics onboard their vessels, often driven by Corporate Social Responsibility programs. Don’t underestimate the challenge of implementing this concept though. It requires convincing of the crew as well.
At Hatenboer-Water we learned that a set of smart tools will help mitigate reluctance amongst crew. Next to dedicated drinking water training for the crew, we will provide you with infographics and we explained the entire concept in a digital magazine. Technicians often want to know all details and so we gladly provide them!
What makes your ‘Plastic-Free @ Sea’ solution stand out?
Not only do we offer a contact-free bottle filling station, but we also combine it with drinking water training for your crew. Our solution saves the environment and is providing significant cost savings for ship managers/operators on water and related expenses by also eliminating an often complicated supply chain and storage issue.
The crew is questioning the water quality on board and does not want to drink it. Now what?
Based on many years of experience, we advise on suitable pre-filtration and disinfection before any water entering the bottle filling station. By communicating to the crew all measures taken and providing regular sampling, assurance of safe water is provided. Besides that, our drinking water experts can train your crew to increase drinking water knowledge which will create awareness and trust in the safety of the provided solution.
How do we get rid of single-use plastic water bottles on board, before 2025?

We also determine a timeline, together. Often, eliminating plastic bottles is achievable before 2025. Several smaller and large shipowners have implemented our solution successfully and are already sailing ‘plastic-free!
