Hatenboer-Water awarded full marks on its first CDP disclosure

Last year we were proud to accept the challenge of one of our most important customers, Van Oord,  and join 12’500+ Small & Medium Enterprises in the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP). A few months later, as the results are in, we are proud to share that we scored SME B for Climate – the highest score awarded in 2024 for the SME category!

As the Dutch saying goes: meten is weten. In homage to this popular wisdom, one of modern management’s most famous principles says: you cannot improve what you don’t measure.

If this is true for the lead-time in RO unit projects (the reason why we have adopted QRM), it’s even more true for our impact on the environment. In fact, most of our carbon footprint is indirect, and therefore difficult to measure. Which is why we were delighted to accept the challenge of the Carbon Disclosure project.

What is the CDP?

Launched in London in 2020, the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) is a global non-for-profit charity that runs a globally recognized disclosure system for investors, companies, cities, states, regions to measure and manage their environmental impact.

Teamwork and strides in emission accounting

The CDP survey is demanding, particularly for an SME – yet the sustainability principles are key to us. We know SMEs are the backbone of Dutch communities  and economy – and thus have a major role to play in the climate transition. Furthermore, our company’s success is intrinsically linked to the well-being of our environment: in fact, one of Hatenboer-Water’s most successful concepts within the maritime industry is Plastic Free @ Sea.

We deem it crucial to equip ourselves with tools needed to contribute and accelerate our customer’s climate action, in addition to our own. Achieving such a high score with CDP is a testament to our dedication to this undertaking.

Thanks to the close collaboration and meticulous efforts put forth by all departments, we were able to build a comprehensive inventory of our carbon emissions in line with the GHG Protocol Corporate Standard, the most widely-recognized guidance for companies to present a true and fair account of their climate impact.

This includes both direct emissions (the so-called Scope 1) related e.g. to the fuel consumption of our Neptunus drinking water supply fleet, and indirect emissions linked to the energy we purchase (Scope 2) or to the upstream and downstream parts of our value chain (partial Scope 3).

Accounting across all 3 scopes, coupled with a rigorous Third-Party validation by Sustaining Supply Chains, has allowed Hatenboer-Water to leapfrog to the management band, on its very first disclosure,  – the highest score awarded to SMEs in 2024.

Frontrunners in the maritime industry

Our first participation in the CDP has been a very motivating experience. It has spurred an unprecedented collaboration effort throughout Hatenboer-Water, and, along the way, it has given us a better picture of the full value footprint of what we do.

We now aim to leverage the information and data in our efforts to make our business more sustainable in a way that is embedded within every QRM cell and Department at Hatenboer-Water. For this reason, this  CDP score helps us determine development areas – we have received valuable advice on how to enhance our practices, which will allow us to focus our efforts on the greatest reduction opportunities.

As we look forward, we are excited about further utilizing our disclosures to foster trust, drive accountability, and provide our customers with transparent insight into the steps we will take in our sustainability journey.
