Where in the World is Hatenboer-Water: The Galápagos Islands
- Maritime, Where in the World is Hatenboer-Water
Was this month’s edition more of a challenge? Some clues may have been the volcanic rock, or perhaps the wild flamingos in the background. Would it have been too obvious if we included, say, a giant tortoise or the only penguin found north of the equator? That’s right! This month’s feature hails from the Galápagos Islands.
When you think of the Galápagos Islands, images of pristine waters, breathtaking wildlife, and untouched landscapes come to mind. This remote archipelago in the Pacific Ocean, located nearly 1,000 km (620 miles) off the coast of Ecuador, is one of the most isolated places on Earth. But even in the most far-flung locations, Hatenboer-Water is there.
Freshwater in the Galápagos: A Unique Challenge
The Galápagos Islands are known for their biodiversity and fragile ecosystem, strict conservation efforts, and limited access to natural freshwater sources. As a result, vessels operating in the region—ranging from eco-tourism ships and research vessels to supply boats must carefully manage their water supply.
In this edition of “Where in the World is Hatenboer Water?”, we highlight a recent mission that took our Water Quality team all the way to the Galápagos, where they conducted crew training on proper water safety and treatment. Their work ensures that vessels in this region, whether supporting eco-tourism, research, or logistics, maintain the highest standards of fresh water management.
Bringing Expertise to One of the World’s Most Isolated Locations
On this occasion, an expedition cruise ship built in the Netherlands was now operating in the remote Pacific. The ship’s officers requested the latest training, operational instruction, and best practices.
This hands-on training covered:
✔ Best practices for onboard water treatment, including filtration, disinfection, and system optimization.
✔ How to monitor and test water quality effectively, ensuring compliance with drinking water safety standards.
✔ Proper disinfection techniques to prevent bacterial contamination, including Legionella control.
✔ The importance of routine system maintenance, filter replacements, and managing consumables.
✔ Eco-friendly water treatment practices to minimize impact on the delicate Galápagos ecosystem.
By working directly with crews and vessel owners, our specialists ensure that vessels operate with safe, high-quality drinking water while minimizing waste and environmental impact – no matter where they were built, or where they operate.

Hatenboer Water: Supporting Customers in Every Corner of the Globe
From bustling offshore hubs like Houston and St. John’s to eco-sensitive locations like the Galápagos, Hatenboer-Water’s presence is truly global. We provide sales, service, spare parts, training, and expert support to vessels of all types, no matter how remote their operations may be. Our global network and hands-on approach allow us to ensure that maritime and offshore operators receive world-class freshwater solutions, whether they’re in a major shipping port or a remote Pacific Island chain.
As vessels travel further into environmentally protected areas, extreme offshore locations, and remote research sites, safe and sustainable freshwater management becomes even more crucial. With our expertise in reverse osmosis desalination, water safety, and crew training, Hatenboer-Water remains a trusted partner to the global maritime industry.
Sustainability and the Plastic-Free @Sea Initiative
Beyond ensuring safe drinking water, Hatenboer-Water is committed to sustainability initiatives that align with environmental conservation efforts—a perfect fit for a region as ecologically sensitive as the Galápagos. Ecuador acts as an environmental steward over the province recognized as a Natural World Heritage Site and in fact, even flights from Guayaquil to the islands prohibit plastic containers on board.
Our Plastic-Free @Sea campaign encourages vessels to reduce their reliance on plastic water bottles by ensuring that onboard fresh water generation and treatment systems provide safe, high-quality drinking water at all times. By training crews to properly maintain and operate onboard water treatment systems, we help eliminate the need for single-use plastic bottles—a significant environmental concern in marine ecosystems.
Vessels operating in protected waters like the Galápagos must meet strict environmental regulations, making sustainable water solutions even more critical. Hatenboer Water ensures that our clients meet these standards while keeping their crews and passengers safe and hydrated.
